Junior Year of High School Strength and Conditioning Goals

99% of the time when Im bringing on a new athletes for training we sit down and discuss their goals and objectives in regards to training. These are all about what the Athlete wants to accomplish, not what I want to accomplish as the coach. I think sometimes this gets taken way to far in the strength and conditioning industry. The Coach wants it more than the Athlete.

I found this difficult to do at first, since I was a High School and Collegiate Football Player. I always wanted to achieve more, but never had the guidance to do so. That’s were I had to take step back and realize if I had the best interest of what I wanted or my athlete. While assessing their goals and objectives I will use some of the following questions to get a better idea of what they want before we step foot into the weight room. Those include, but are not limited to:

What do you want to accomplish?

Have you had any injuries in the past?

Do you have any current injuries?

How much weight do you want to put on?

Can you recall what you have eaten in the past 3 Days, if not, do a food journal and bring it back.

Do you want to get your maxes up on bench, squat, deadlifts, and hang clean/power clean?

How many days do you want to come in and train?

Are you wanting to work on your speed, agility, and Change of Direction?

Are you 100% committed to this?

Who is supporting you on this journey?

Asking all of these questions may seem crazy, but it gets the Athlete thinking about lots of different things.

Time Commitment, Fatigue, Stress, and etc…

You have to dig and dig and dig some more sometimes to get the the underlying issue of WHY they want to be successful.

Once the Athletes has given me all the feedback necessary, i then start to develop a program that best fits what they have provided.
