Your Guide To SMART Goals

With the New Year approaching, you’ve probably already thought about some resolutions you’d like to accomplish this coming year.

Even if 2020 was a great year for you, you may still want 2021 to be your best year ever.

And you can do this by setting SMART goals.

What are SMART goals? They are a type of goal that you set for yourself that have a higher chance of success than going at it without a plan.

So how do you write SMART goals?

It’s pretty easy, once you understand what SMART stands for. Let’s break it down so it’s easier to understand—so you can see how powerful these goals can be:

S-Specific

If you want to really succeed in reaching your goals, you need to make sure they are specific in nature. A goal of losing weight, or putting on muscle, is not specific enough. But if you tell yourself you’re going to lose 5 pounds in two weeks by eating breakfast every day, that’s more specific, and should be a lot easier to accomplish. When setting your goals, make sure you make them as specific as possible to increase your odds of reaching them.

M—Measurable

Each goal should have some way to measure your success. This could mean you set smaller goals, which could be helpful to reach your ultimate goal. And as you hit those smaller goals, you’re measuring and tracking your progress, which will keep you motivated.

A—Attainable

You need to be sure your goals are attainable. Setting lofty goals that you know you won’t be able to reach, sets you up for failure. Knowing you can accomplish a goal, with a lot of work on your end, might keep you focused and motivated. Setting attainable goals will go a long way to ensuring success in the future.

R—Realistic

Your goals also need to be realistic. You’re not going to lose 100 pounds in 3 months, or put on loads of muscle in a couple weeks. When setting your goals, make sure they are realistic and that you will be able to accomplish them. If your goals aren’t realistic, go back and see what you can do to make them more realistic, so you have something to shoot for.

T—Timely

You always need to set a timeframe for reaching your goals. Leaving it open-ended, with no end time in sight, makes it easier to lose motivation and focus. But if you know that you have a short period of time to accomplish your goals, then it should help keep your eye on the prize.

If you’re already thinking about your resolutions for next year, make sure that you follow the SMART principles.
