The Company You Keep

All too often, I’ve seen people struggle with achieving their fitness goals because they have negative people in their lives rooting against them.

A few reminders:

– Surround yourself with people who make your eyes light up when they walk into the room … and eliminate those whose presence you dread.

– Negative people are energy vampires. If you let them, they’ll extract all of yours and come back for more.

– Positive people add energy and happiness to your life. Spend more time with people like that.

– It’s been documented and proven that people do better when they start a fitness routine with a friend, family member, or partner. Seek out someone who wants to do this with you and support your efforts … and avoid those who say things like, “C’mon … what's the big deal if you miss one workout?”

– What negative people say about you is 100% about them and 0% about you.

– Your thoughts matter. A lot. Be conscious of what your mind is spending time thinking about, because those are the things you’re putting energy into and attracting. They better be things you want.

– There’s no such thing as success or failure. You get to decide what meanings to assign to those experiences.

So if you’re struggling or in a rut with your fitness, take inventory of the people you’re spending time with and the kind of thoughts you’re having. Oftentimes, there’s a strong connection between the two.

And if you “find yourself” in circumstances you don’t like, remember that you didn’t “find” those circumstances. You created them … and you alone can change them.
