Sports Performance Training Should Be FUN!!
There are some days that I might not be the most likable coach to a kid, but I do know when there is a time to work and a time to have fun while training athletes.
Coming into a new session with a kid I like to set the tone and be sure that he/she knows what we are at the facility to accomplish. Get Faster, Get Stronger, and do things properly. With that being said, it may take some kids a bit longer to come out of their shell and open up about things.
Some may not like my old man jokes as some kids say or that I don’t like the latest rap music.
But, I do know one thing: How to get the most out of an athlete while training them. I know when to be serious and when to cut up. When to increase the weight and challenge them or when to turn up the tempo on conditioning.
With all of the other coaching that goes on outside of what i’m trying to accomplish in the weight room, kids get yelled at, belittled, and just get treated like crap by their coaches. For me that doesnt create a lot of buy in from the athlete. They shut down and tune it out and don’t seem interested after that.
I want kids to come back and be excited for their workouts.
I heard this from an athlete just this week, “ Coach, Im going to go up just a little bit because its easy and I want to stronger.” Thats coming from and eight grader who went from 10lbs dumbbell bench press to over three months of training to 25lbs. He’s all in because of the little bit of progress and the amount of time, effort, and energy I pour in each week.
We have competitions, we talk smack to each other, and we listen to each others favorite music. Why?
Because this type of stuff should be fun, not serious every time we come into the building. Kids have long days at school, some not even eating full lunch because of a tutoring session. So, started having BASKETBALL FRIDAYS. You might think why basketball of all sports. Its because we have a goal out back and there is just enough space for small game of hoops.
You might be thinking this is a waste of money and time on the parents part. I say NO!! Its a time we can have fun and sometimes get the most effort out of kid during the week because he wants bragging rights for the entire week. I love it!! It fires me up!! Its because I jump right in there as well. I play 1v1 or whatever it is. NO great joy in an athletes than beating your coach at something. As soon as the doors swing open on FRIDAY, you can see the smiles from ear to ear because its BASKETBALL FRIDAY. They get excited and I think thats what its all about. Having FUN and getting the most out of each and every kid without having to crush them with weight and speed training every day.

P.S. - Whenever you're ready... here are 3 ways I can help you:
1. Let's Talk About Your Goals.
Most gyms want you to simply adapt to their program, but I want to help you achieve your goal is the best possible way for you.
If you'd like to get on a personal call and discuss what you'd like to achieve and get my help in developing a plan to get you there, I'm happy to get on a free coaching call to help.
Just reply with 'Call' in the subject line and we'll get it set up.
2. Train With Me...For FREE.
If you'd like to come in for a free training session...1 on 1 or group...I'd love to have you in as my guest. Training somewhere new can be out of someone's comfort zone, so I want to make it as easy as possible for you to see if this is the best place for you to reach your goals.
Just reply with 'Train' in the subject line and we'll figure out what type of session you'd enjoy most and when coming in would be convenient for you.
3. Try My '28 Days To Look & Feel Great' Program.
I'm going to be taking a few new clients through a 28 day program to help them look and feel great as they get back into a routine this Fall.
If you'd be interested in learning more, reply and put '28' in the subject line.
